Car and Trailer Towing Training in Livingston

Practical towing training for trailer and horsebox drivers who want to tow safely and with confidence.

Do I need a test to tow a trailer?

Since December 2021 there has been no separate car and trailer (B+E) driving test. If you have a full car licence you can now tow a trailer up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass, as long as it is within the towing limit of your car.

Not needing a test does not mean towing is easy. Reversing, judging width and length, loading a trailer correctly and knowing your weight limits all take practice, and getting them wrong can be dangerous and expensive.

Towing familiarisation training

Our towing training is practical and hands-on, and covers:

  • Coupling and uncoupling safely
  • Pre-use checks on the car and trailer
  • Loading, weight distribution and securing the load
  • Reversing and manoeuvring with a trailer
  • On-road driving, including speed limits and stopping distances

It is ideal for horsebox and caravan owners, tradespeople and company drivers. Training can be certified for company drivers. If you need to tow behind a lorry or minibus, see our C1+E and D1+E courses.
