Category 'D' Bus and Coach Licence Training in Livingston

PCV driver training for buses and coaches, taking you from your car licence to a full category D licence.

What does a category D licence let you drive?

A category D licence, often called a PCV (passenger carrying vehicle) licence, lets you drive any bus or coach with more than 8 passenger seats, towing a trailer of up to 750kg. It opens the door to careers in local bus services, school transport, private hire and touring coaches.

How to get your D licence

  1. Apply to DVLA for your provisional category D entitlement using the D2 application form, together with a D4 medical report completed by a doctor. You can book your medical through our driver medicals service.
  2. Study for and pass the theory test: a multiple choice part and a hazard perception part.
  3. Complete your practical training and take the DVSA practical driving test.
  4. To drive passengers professionally, you will also need to complete the Driver CPC initial qualification, including the case study test and the practical demonstration test.

Manual or automatic?

If you pass your test in an automatic bus, your licence will be restricted to automatic vehicles. Ask us about the vehicle you will train in when you book, so you end up with the licence that suits the work you want to do.

Minimum age

The minimum age for driving buses and coaches depends on whether you hold Driver CPC and the type of service you will be driving. Give us a call and we will explain what applies to you.

Once qualified, keep your licence working with our periodic Driver CPC training. For smaller vehicles, see our Category 'D1' minibus licence course.
