Category 'C1+E' Licence Training in Livingston, West Lothian

Add a trailer to your C1 entitlement and tow behind a 7.5 tonne lorry, up to 12 tonnes combined weight.

What does a C1+E licence let you drive?

A C1+E licence lets you drive a C1 vehicle (between 3,500kg and 7,500kg) towing a trailer over 750kg, as long as the combined maximum authorised mass of the lorry and trailer does not exceed 12,000kg. The trailer must also stay within the rated towing capacity of the towing vehicle.

It is a popular upgrade for drivers working with plant, horseboxes, car transporters, event equipment and recovery vehicles, where a 7.5 tonne lorry needs to pull a heavier trailer.

Before you start

  • You must hold a full category 'C1' licence, with C1+E showing as a provisional entitlement.
  • If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997 you may already have C1 on your licence. To add C1+E you will need a driver medical and a provisional C1+E entitlement first.
  • Apply for the provisional entitlement with the D2 application form and a D4 medical report. Our driver medicals service can help with the D4.

The training

Once your provisional entitlement is in place you go straight on to practical training. You will cover vehicle checks, coupling and uncoupling, the reversing exercise, and on-road driving with a trailer, before taking your practical test with the DVSA.

Don't have your C1 yet? Start with our Category 'C1' licence course. For heavier combinations, see our Category 'C+E' licence training.
